OVERVIEW

With programs throughout San Mateo County, the Peninsula Conservatory of Music offers private and semi-private music instruction to students of all ages and levels.

  • Private Instruction

The exceptional success of our program can be attributed to an innovative approach, which allows the students to actively participate in designing their own curricula while our experienced instructors ensure the highest quality of music education. Private classes are planned around each student's preferred style of music as well as individual goals and expectations, which are defined at the beginning of each term and are benchmarked throughout the year. Based on the student's selected style of music, our faculty members use a combination of well-established teaching methods to cover music theory, ear training, technique and musicianship. The general principles of rhythm and harmony, for example, can be taught through a wide variety of genres and styles of music. Since they choose their own music, Peninsula Conservatory students gain mastery of their repertoire much more quickly than if they were assigned a rigid curriculum of no particular interest to them. While many of our students pursue a traditional course of study modeled after European conservatories, many others seek training in jazz, pop or world music.

  • Supervised Practice

Learning effective practice habits is an essential part of playing music. This is why our private instruction program also includes a supervised practice component, which enables the students to identify their own individual technical challenges, determine the desired outcome and, with the instructor's help, develop specific a exercise plan for the following week.

  • Recitals

There are two recitals each year where students of all levels can demonstrate their talents in a public performance. These recitals are also the basis for merit scholarships awarded to gifted students. New students wishing to apply for merit scholarships will be auditioned prior to registration.

  • Semi-Private Lessons

Semi-private lessons provide an excellent opportunity for first and second year students to learn the basics of music. In semi-private classes, students are paired according to age and proficiency level.

  • Certificates

Upon completion of each term, graduates receive appropriate certificates, which reflect their level of achievement consistent with other major music programs and academies.

Recent research suggests that music instruction can increase the one's aptitude for language and math.
